East Africa Impact Toolkit Guide

(Do note that the East Africa Impact Toolkit Guide is still under development – please send any comments and suggestions to hello@b-labeastafrica.net and thandiwen@genesis-analytics.com).

Introduction

B Lab East Africa and Genesis Analytics were awarded a grant by the DFID, under the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), to jointly conduct an ecosystem mapping exercise on the available impact measurement tools, frameworks and standards used in the small and growing business (SGB) sector in East Africa. The aim of this ecosystem mapping exercise is to develop a platform that will disseminate information to development practitioners in East Africa. The platform will work as a reference point for anyone who wants information on the available impact measurement and management tools available in the market.

Catalyt fund for Impact Measurement Africa

The goal of the ANDE Catalyst Fund is to increase the productivity and effectiveness of ANDE members while creating tools and insights that can help the SGB sector as a whole.

With this challenge fund round, awarded in May 2018, ANDE supported organizations to test measurement tools, frameworks, and analytical approaches, and who are willing to learn from and inform ANDE members based on their experience in order to move impact measurement and management forward for the field as a whole.

This funding round is generously funded by Department for International Development’s (DFID) Impact Programme.

Steps taken

In-depth research: The activities commenced with a desktop review of all existing tools in market as well as a review of publications and reports released on measurement tools. This was also complemented by conducting one on one interviews with associations and sector measurement experts in order to understand tools in market that are new, have gone through overhaul, not well known etc.

Survey: A survey was sent to different stakeholders in the East African market (companies, investors, NGOs, Government associations, intermediaries) which will include both ANDE members and non-ANDE members.

Sharing: The mapping platform was launched through an event announced via social media, newsletters and websites.

Feedback and Review: Following the launch, roundtable discussions were held, which were used to present findings, collect feedback on content and on the platform itself. The roundtable discussions hosted representatives from all stakeholder groups in both Kenya and Uganda.

We have presented this work on this website as Impact Measurement Standards, Data Collection Tools and Impact Metrics (click below to view each).
